Fade In

NIMES FRANCE – 1815

Black.

INT –A HIDING SPACE AT THE DESORMEAU CHATEAU -DAY

Black screen. A distant mob can barely be heard outside through the walls of the Chateau. Three different sets of footsteps can be heard rapidly approaching on a wood floor. At first the footsteps are on solid floor, then on hollow as they come to a frantic stop. Suddenly there is the muffled sound of a rug being yanked off a floor. This allows shafts of light to poor through the floorboards in the trapdoor that is above the camera frame. Next, the trap door is flung open, which illuminates the space. Three sets of legs frantically descend the space’s small flight of stairs. CARRINE DESORMEAU a wealthy woman in her late 20s makes it to the bottom of the stairs and huddles together with her 10 year-old son, JULIEN, and her 6 year-old daughter, HELENE. As Carrine places her hand over the mouth of Helene to keep her quiet, we see a very distinctive ring with the letter “D” engraved on it.

INT –AN UPSTAIRS HALLWAY OF THE DESORMEAU’S CHATEAU –CONTINUOUS

We see the hall of a 19th Century French Chateau. At the end of the hall is window. There is a rug bundled on the floor. A rope goes from the rug into a hole in the floor. The camera pans toward the window. Suddenly the slack is pulled out of the rope as it travels through the hole in the trapdoor causing the rug to straighten and conceal the trapdoor. As the camera continues to track toward the window a rock breaks the glass and lands in the hall. HELENE’S shriek can be heard from beneath the floorboards. The broken window allows the volume of the mob to intensify. The camera reaches the window to reveal a mob rattling the gates of the Desormeau’s chateau.
