Christian Filmmakers.org Holiday Contest Winners

ChristianFilmmakers.org recently had a 24-hour film contest, and I had the privilege of being one of the judges. Above is a playlist featuring this year's entries. The first eight are the ranked winners (starting with 1st place). All videos are one minute or less.

If you are a Christian and interested in filmmaking, I heartily recommend joining ChristianFilmmakers.org. It's a great place to meet like minded Christian artists.

IPhone Test

So, Kristina and I ordered refurbished iPhones yesterday and received them today. Refurbished is the way to go. It's much less expensive, and I can't tell it isn't new. Anyway, I got a blog app and wanted to try it out.

Digg It!

Our' latest comedy short has been posted on the front page of Digg. Please help it say there by "Digging" it. http://digg.com/

The Effects of Color...Effects

Ramsey Bros. Pictures' latest short, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to Murder," required quite a bit of color grading. The interiors were filmed in John's one car garage. Black cloth and poster board were hung to cover the portions of the garage wall that were visible to the camera. We figured we could get away with that since the characters were supposed to be in the middle of nowhere. The scene was lit with shop lights (mounted on a neighboring SUV) and various other non-pro lights. Since they cast a yellow hue, color correction was required. Oh, and we used a laptop to simulate the speedometer lights.

This last shot was particularly tricky. In the original shot, the hitchhiker, played by Andy Ritchie, rode shotgun, while John's wife, Anna, drove. (John was doing a stand-up show that night and wouldn't join us until later.) In addition to color correcting the shot, I decided to crop and shrink our standard two shot of John and Andy and "paste" it over the windshield and have it track with the moving van. "Did you believe science was a disinterested pursuit of the truth? Well, you were wrong."

The Devil's Delusion

The Wall Street Journal's Daniel Henninger discusses how the Climategate scandal could cause the general public to doubt the objectivity of other controversial scientific claims. I think that's a good thing. For the full article, click here.

"'Global Warming,' Sir? I'm sorry that's just a bunch of scientist talk -same people who'd have you believe that my great-grandfather was a monkey. If he was a monkey, then why was he killed by a monkey?"
-30 Rock's Kenneth Parcell
Episode: "Sun Tea"
Air date: 11/19/2009

On a related note, here is a fantastic article by Salvo Magazine claiming that, contrary to stereotype, it is often the secular left (rather than Christians) who are against objective science.

My brother, Wil, posted this video on my facebook. I think it's hilarious and has a great premise. In fact, I think this is similar to what passes as "scholarship" on a lot of television specials about Biblical history.

dude on the set of "not a fan."

The 5th episode of "not a fan" requires one of the characters to have a two year-old son. My two year-old son nailed the aud-ish. Actually, there was no audition. They just kind of cast him.

Anyway, here's a brief snippet of his behind the scenes antics. My personal favorite: flying like Buzz Lightyear.

Note: The audio, for some reason, is out of sync. Perhaps it will improve as the video undergoes more processing. If not, it really doesn't matter as no one speaks on camera after the first ten seconds anyway.

not a fan - week 4

Shane has a new director's journal up at the CHP Blog. I have been lovingly banished from the set pending the Ramsey family's recovery from the stomach virus of '09...oh wait...I guess I need to be more specific...the stomach virus of October '09...as opposed to the stomach virus of January/February '09...but I angrily digress. I'll return to the set next week and should be able to pick up on the behind the scenes videos then.

NF-Fight in the Shelter from City on a Hill.
"Hey everyone - Kevin (our DP and primary editor) did an edit of one of the scenes we filmed last week, a scene in which Eric has a very passionate argument with his father, Bill. This is the same scene that we posted a iPhone video from Gabe (our AD), so you can see how it all came together! One important note: in our process, we're recording sound separately, so its just music video style. If you like the tune, go buy Brandon Heath's GIVE ME YOUR EYES!"

Not A Fan - Day 2

I've worked out a system with the "Behind the Scenes" videographer to start snagging some stills. In the meantime, here's some from director Shane Sooter's twitter.

The weather was terrible and dreary. Though I must say it did work for one scene. But, another scene got canceled. In any case, the things we did get to film turned out really nice. The actors have been really terrific.

And, in other exciting, cast-related news. David Attebury (Julien in The Oath of Desormeau) joined the cast today. He'll be playing the younger version of the series' main character, Eric. I'm really excited to work with him again.

Tonight, I have to do some small rewrites for some of tomorrow's scenes.

Here's the next flagship project for City on a Hill Productions.

With The Beatles

So, the other day, I'm up at the office late trying to plow through a bout of writer's block. I have some script rewrites to do for City on a Hill Productions' upcoming Bible study series, Not A Fan. I round the corner of the upstairs hallway to see our very own John Howard, aka "Sound Dude," coming up the stairs the with The Beatles Rock Band in tow.

As if I needed any more temptation to run away in a panic from my computer.

Oddly enough, the game, which is totally awesome by the way, is helping me get through my assignments. I find that when I allow Rock Band to be the self-administered reward for a certain amount of work, I get a lot more done.

Anyway, I gotta go. I have a meeting with John, Paul, George, and Ringo, in a couple of hours.
