"Children of the Mountains"

Back in February, Diane Sawyer released her news special "Children of the Mountians," which chronicled the trials of many of Appalachia's children. When we visited Appalachia a couple of weeks ago, the people we talked to had mixed feeling about Sawyer's special. Thankfully, the segment has inspired many people to help, which was largely Sawyer's intent.

I'd be interested in hearing about those "mixed feelings".

Some of our interviewees said they wished that there had been more emphasis on the positive -particularly the fact that there are people there who are not so poor and that a lot of help does come from inside the mountains as well as the outside.

They all emphasized that there are wonderful people in the area who also help those in need.

At the same time, however, some of them said that without any reporting on the negative, no one would realize how difficult things are, and, as a result, many people wouldn't help because they wouldn't see the need.
